Why are people in the US obsessed with meeting new people and why has matchmaking become an industry?

You see it on TV, you hear it on the radio, and you see it on the internet...Why has matchmaking and online dating become such a big thing within the past 5-6 years? What happened to good old-fashioned sitting down and talking to someone you like...?

Why are people in the US obsessed with meeting new people and why has matchmaking become an industry?
because people are lonely.

And they have no other way of meeting people.

but have you seen the e harmony commercials?

I think all those people are simply matched with people that look like them. haha
Reply:There isn't time...things are moving so fast now, we don't want to spend the time, learning about one another over a long courtship....people get married after knowing someone from the Internet, only a few months...Insane.

Life was so much nicer when your Aunt, knew this boy,,from a good family,,who wanted to meet you..Auntie sets it up and you first go to dinner to meet him, at Auntie house..then next time a movie...over a long period of time....you date..do kids even know the word.. then you get engaged...get married...have babies...in that order...oh, for the good old days, when marriage was taken seriously and divorce was the last resort.
Reply:Because most of your successful business types in America are too busy to meet anyone other than coworkers who they can't POSSIBLY date. We don't have many arranged marriages anymore and the parties (on average) are either too formal/business to really talk to someone OR everyone is drunk and looking to hook up.

We're swiftly losing our people skills, i fear.
Reply:I don't know about other parts of the U.S. but where I live it is looked down upon a mother to talk to someone in a traditional dating since. So they go on the web just so they can talk to people.
Reply:Whatcha' doin Saturday night?
